Post-truth of the 2016. And best wishes for the 2017!

The language is an amazing system. Not only it allows us to communicate with one another. It also is a true mirror of the society.

In some of the Nordic languages, there are thousands of words to describe snow. Whereas, the languages of the equatorial countries can have less than a dozen. What it means – is that the people normally become good in describing something which is part of their daily experiences. Whereas, the objects which are less common, or outdated – might lead to the respective words –  disappearing from the language, or never even become part of the active vocabulary. Respectively, when the daily experiences change, it may require for the new words – to become more or less popular.

The words of the year, annually shared by the Oxford Dictionary – are not chosen by accident. These are the new words most frequently used in a public sphere, as a result, they are being added to the Oxford Dictionary.

As part of the Oxford Dictionary update of the 2016, the word  “post-truth” has been announced – as the Word of 2016. “Post-truth” is an adjective defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief’.

Oh dear..

Hope 2017 will bring some new words, that will symbolise more positive trends in our civil society. Worth to mention, that in the 2015, the word of the year was emoji , ” ???? ” commonly known as ‘Face with Tears of Joy’. As for the year before that (2014) – the word of that one was “vape”. Hope 2017 will become a good change of the trend though.
